Cracked by R.K. Belford5/23/2023 By the end of the book, the characters have undergone a metamorphosis and seem to have become whole. The characters are endearing and Belford is successful in carrying the reading through their personal development over the dozen chapters of the story. “Enjoyable two-night read: If you are looking for a light and enjoyable read, this is a great novella to accompany a cup of tea and a warm blanket. Set in rural America, this story combines an intriguing mystery with quirky characters. “A simple story, but engagingly told.” ***** (5 stars) – Mike S. Gates the signifying monkey5/23/2023 The Fon hail him as a “divine linguist” who knows all languages. Esu is closely associated with language and its powers: rhetoric and persuasion, slipperiness and metaphor. A central figure in this cultural tradition is Esu-Elegbara, a “divine trickster,” whose attributes are described in the prose and poetry of West Africa. Gates begins his search for the “black tradition’s” theory of itself in the Fon and Yoruba cultures of Benin and Nigeria, and among the remnants of those cultures that survived the Middle Passage to thrive in the Americas. Often regarded as a foundational text of black literary theory, the book’s stated intention is “if not exactly to invent a black theory…to locate and identify how the 'black tradition' had theorized about itself.” Gates achieves this by focusing on the Black cultural practice of “signifyin(g),” a sophisticated form of wordplay, which Gates traces back to a figure of Yoruba myth, and forward through the novels of Alice Walker, Zora Neale Hurston, Ralph Ellison, and other major African-American authors. The Signifying Monkey: A Theory of African-American Literary Criticism is a groundbreaking work of literary theory by revered African-American scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr.

Click, Clack, Boo! by Doreen Cronin5/23/2023 Now the sounds repeat, as the figure comes closer. Readers will chuckle and easily recognize “the dark creature standing beneath the trees.” The farmer, however, runs to his bedroom to pull the covers up over his head. The “crunch, crunch, crunching” and the “creak, creak, creaking” lead to a “tap, tap, tapping.” Hearing them, Farmer Brown peeks out his window to investigate. As field mice and cats arrive, creepy sounds begin. Saturated watercolors show Cow dressed as a skeleton, the chickens looking quite ghostly and the sheep donning witch hats. Since Farmer Brown wants nothing to do with the scary holiday, “he leaves a bowl of candy on the porch….draws the shades and locks the door.” Out in the barn, though, the party is just getting started. Sounds like the perfect time for tricks and treats!

The ruin of kings book 25/22/2023 The thing about this book is that it is confusing. Honestly, it’s an achievement I finished this book at all since I’ve tried to read this book three times before and was unsuccessful all three times. Jenn Lyons begins the Chorus of Dragons series with The Ruin of Kings, an epic fantasy novel about a man who discovers his fate is tied to the future of an empire. For Kihrin is not destined to save the world. Then again, maybe he isn’t the hero after all. The storybooks have lied about a lot of other things, too: dragons, demons, gods, prophecies, and how the hero always wins. Practically a prisoner, Kihrin discovers that being a long-lost prince is nothing like what the storybooks promised. When he is claimed against his will as the missing son of a treasonous prince, Kihrin finds himself at the mercy of his new family’s ruthless power plays and political ambitions. Kihrin grew up in the slums of Quur, a thief and a minstrel’s son raised on tales of long-lost princes and magnificent quests. When destiny calls, there’s no fighting back. The prince's dressmaker5/22/2023 The dressmaker is Frances, one of many seamstresses working at a local dress shop. A ball is being held to celebrate his sixteenth birthday, and his parents are eager for him to find a princess to marry, as he will have to carry on the royal line. Prince Sebastian is the Crown Prince of Belgium, and he and his parents the king and queen are staying in Paris for the summer. I hesitate to spoil it any more than I already have-the best way to review the book without risking any of its pleasures would be to write a simple, two-word imperative, “Read it”-but when the extent of the acceptance being offered the prince first begins to take shape, it is about as electric and triumphant a moment in a comic book that I can remember. Wang’s characters are so fully realized, their conflicts and emotions so palpable, and their world so exact, so vital, and so well executed that it’s easy to forget that it is a fairy tale-at least until the happy ending arrives, the first signs of it doing so striking like a lightning bolt. That The Prince and the Dressmaker invites such criticism is actually a credit to it. That prince, in some scenes, even dresses a bit like the Prince Charming of Disney’s Cinderella, with which Wang’s tale has some thematic commonality. And Wang’s book is very much a fairy tale, even opening with a ball being thrown for a handsome young prince, where it is hoped he will find a princess to marry.
